This gripping Austrian-German drama is based on true events having to do with Operation Bernhard, a secret plan by Nazi Germany during the Second World War to destabilize the United Kingdom by flooding its economy with forged Bank of England pound notes. The film centers on a Jewish counterfeiter who is coerced into assisting the operation at the Sachsenhausen concentration camp.
The Counterfeiters won the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar at the 80th Academy Awards and was nominated for the Golden Bear Award at the Berlin Film Festival in 2007.
