A. R. Gurney has been writing plays for many years. They have been performed throughout the United States, abroad, and occasionally on Broadway. Among his works are Children, The Dining Room, The Cocktail Hour, Love Letters, Sylvia, Ancestral Voices, Indian Blood, and Black Tie.He has also written several more specifically political plays for the Flea Theatre in Tribeca, such as O Jerusalem, Mrs. Farnsworth, and, most recently, Heresy. He is the author of three published novels, several television scripts, and the libretto for the one-act opera Strawberry Fields (music by Michael Torke). Gurney taught literature at M.I.T. for twenty-five years before devoting himself full time to the theatre. He is a member of the Theatre Hall of Fame and the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and holds honorary degrees from Williams College and Buffalo State University.
