Losing ‘default, unalterable fate’ in how we give birth, are embodied and die as being increasingly condemned to freedom
Pieter Bonte studied philosophy at Ghent University (UGent) and law at the Free University of Brussels (VUB) and now works as an FWO doctoral researcher at the Bioethics Institute Ghent (2010-2014), studying the (im)possibility of dignified self-change via biotechnology and selection or manipulation of one’s offspring. Focusing on the dimension of the human enhancement enterprise as an expansion of practical personal liber-ties (and accompanying responsibilities), he is exploring the validity of an existentialist understanding of the human enhancement enterprise as a ‘condemnation to be free’. As such, the enhancement enterprise may not at all be a ‘dehumanizing’ and ‘alienating’ enterprise as critics commonly advance, but on the contrary an enterprise that confronts us with the authentic human condition, making ‘existence precede essence’ in a practical, acute way. In turn, this equally problematizes pro-enhancement enthusiasm. He was co-editor of the Springer volume Athletic Enhancement, Human Nature and Ethics and has written on topics ranging from doping over chemical castration to preconception care. He has been a visiting researcher at Oxford University’s Uehiro Center for Practical Ethics; the Hastings Center; the Centre des Recherches en Éthique de l’Université de Montréal and the Yale Interdisciplinary Center for Bioethics.
