Film Screening and Fundraiser: Girl Rising
Sponsored by WGRAC
The film, Girl Rising, features nine girls in varying countries who recount their stories of hardship and servitude in areas where education is out of reach. Through educating and empowering girls families and communities can thrive. This film and the accompanying fundraiser demonstrate the power of education and the tools to make it a reality for girls.
This program is a fundraiser for the construction of a girl’s school in Northern Mali, spearheaded by Trinity student Fatty Al Ansar ’17.
Fatty and her twin sister, at age 10, taught girls in her home region of Northern Mali to read and write. Years later Fatty raised funds to open a school in her home region of Northern Mali, an area with few girls’ schools, where families often married daughters off at a young age or sold them into servitude. Due to the conflict in the region her students and their families were forced into refugee campus, and her school closed. Land has been donated, and WGRAC and others are helping Fatty to raise funds to build a new girl’s school. Fatty is returning to Mali this summer to re-launch her dream.
Fatty will make a brief presentation after the film. A reception will follow.
All students with IDs will be admitted without charge.
