 This course is an historical survey of important Latin American Social and Political Thinkers.  Thinkers covered may include las Casas, Sepulveda, Bolivar, Sarmiento, Marti, Mariategui, Vasconcelso, and Dussel.  Topics covered will include Latin American perspectives on race, ethnicity, racial hybridity, nationality, the idea of Latin America, the rights of indigenous peoples, revolution, colonialism, and Latin American positivism, among others.  All assigned readings will be in English.  No knowledge of Spanish or Portuguese is needed.  Latin American thinkers are increasingly recognized as among the most important and innovative contributors to the corpus of social and political ideas.  This course provides a unique opportunity to be introduced to this significant intellectual formation.
