Mandala: The Sacred Art of Sand Film Screening of The Cup
(1999) Written and directed by Khyentse Norbu. Cast: Orgyen Tobgyal, Neten Chokling, Jamyang Lodro, Lama Chonjor, Godu Lama.
As part of the Mandala: The Sacred Art of Sand Project, Cinestudio presents a free screening of a fascinating and amusing look at the Western influences reaching into a Tibetan Buddhist monastery (filmed in Butan). High in the Himalayas, the young monks (who play themselves in the film) have devoted their lives to an ancient religious tradition and rigorous spiritual discipline. They are also high-spirited teenagers obsessed with soccer. The boys brainstorm how to convince a stern older monk that they need to see the 1998 World Cup final - and how to transport a TV and satellite dish to their remote mountain home. “The Cup has a luminous air of religious conviction. It is also a very funny movie, alive with a sense of absurdity and human foible.” - A.O. Scott New York Times. 94 min(G).
