Jean Pfaelzer is professor of English, women’s studies, and Asian studies at the University of Delaware and a Library of Congress Scholar. In 2011 she was the Senior Fulbright Scholar in American Culture at the University of Utrecht, Netherlands. She is the author of Driven Out! The Forgotten War Against Chinese Americans and the author of four other books, including The Utopian Novel in America and Parlor Radical: Rebecca Harding Davis and the Origins of American Social Realism. Professor Pfaelzer recently signed an advance contract for a forthcoming book, Of Human Bondage: Slavery in California.
Pfaelzer received a B.A. and M.A. from the University of California, Berkeley. She then went to Cambridge University, United Kingdom, to study the politics of culture with Raymond Williams, and while there she received a second graduate diploma and finished her Ph.D. dissertation on American utopianism at University College, London.
The lecture honors the memory of Jan Cohn, G. Keith Funston Professor of American Literature and American Studies, and the first woman to be dean of faculty at Trinity College.
