For those of you I have not met yet, I am the new Assistant Director of Student Activities and I directly oversee the programs happening within and the operations of Vernon Social, your newest programming spot on campus! I wanted to outreach to the campus in order to provide some updated information regarding Vernon Social and to encourage you all to utilize the beautiful and multifunctional spaces within this building for your use.
Vernon Social Hours of Operation
Sunday – Wednesday 7:30 a.m.-1:00 a.m.
Thursday - Saturday 7:30 a.m.-2:30 a.m.
Vernon Social is used during the day primarily as a place to eat, study or meet up with friends/faculty/staff. It generally is not reservable during weekdays for this reason so that the space is open and 100% accessible. However, that does not mean that a day time event can never happen; we would just need to see a valid argument for use of the space. Evenings and weekends however, the space is available for programs such as performances, speakers, lectures, dance parties, bingo nights, trivia nights, karaoke, etc. The possibilities are endless!
Event Request Process
In order to have an event in Vernon Social, all student organizations/college departments must go through the event request process. The process itself is fairly simple:
2. The Vernon Programming Board reviews all event requests that are submitted throughout the week every Friday afternoon. They discuss the positives to each event, the challenges, the obstacles if they see any, and provide their approval, or provide feedback to those organizations that maybe need to tweak some details before the event can be approved.
3. Once approved, you will confirm all details a few days before your event to make sure that nothing has changed and that your event will occur without a hitch.
Please note: Event Requests must be submitted a minimum of 2 weeks prior to your proposed event date. The reason for this is that, if there have been no submissions for the upcoming weekend, the Programming Board takes the time to plan an event themselves to fill that time. Also, if there are any challenges or issues with your event proposal that need to be addressed before your event can happen, it is much easier to address those issues without last-minute pressure.
If your department/organization currently uses Vernon Social for group meetings, or if you plan on using Vernon Social for group meetings (which you can do!), please let me know so I can keep track of that on our calendar and, if you want, help publicize those meetings to encourage new membership. We want to keep track of all of the ways Vernon Social is used, including something as simple as a committee or organization meeting, so just let us know the day/time of your regular meetings or if you are planning something a little larger!
Finally, I would love to hear your feedback of how Vernon Social is currently being utilized and how we can better serve this campus. This facility was built as a social hub for all constituencies on campus (students, staff, faculty, community members, guests, alumni, etc.) so, if there is a way to make things better, we want to know!
