Due to the increasing number of women in correctional settings, there is a growing recognition of the need for gender-responsive services. Their pathways into the systems (substance abuse, violence, and poverty) provide the framework for developing effective services. Critical to the success of any intervention is the process of engagement, so that justice-involved women gain insight and increase their ability to thrive.
Dr. Stephanie Covington is a clinician, author, organizational consultant, and lecturer recognized for her pioneering work in the development and implementation of gender-responsive and trauma-informed services in the public and private sectors. Educated at Columbia University and the Union Institute, Dr. Covington has served on the faculties of the University of Southern California, San Diego State University, and the California School of Professional Psychology. Her publications include manuals for eight treatment programs. Based in La Jolla, California, Dr. Covington is co-director of the Institute for Relational Development and the Center for Gender and Justice.
