LA GRANDE BELLEZZA
(Italy, 2013) Directed by Paolo Sorrentino. Screenplay by Paolo Sorrentino and Umberto Contarello.
Cast: Toni Servillo, Carlo Verdone, Sabrina Ferilli, Iaia Forte, Carlo Buccirosso.
Special week-long premiere! The Great Beauty, by director Paolo Sorrentino (Il Divo), has both been hugely popular, and sharply divided audiences with its overarching question: Is Italy in decline? Gorgeous to look at, with an elegiac feeling of regret for a society plagued by apathy and corruption, The Great Beauty has much in common with Fellini's masterpiece, La Dolce Vita. A 65-year-old journalist (Toni Servillo of Il Divo and Gomorra), sets off on a walk through Rome after he receives news that an old lover has died. Insulated from the city's charm by the cynicism of his hothouse milieu, the journalist begins to rediscover the still-awesome beauty of Rome's history, architecture, and people.
Winner: Best Film, Director and Actor, 2013 European Film Awards.
