To Members of the Campus Community:
I am pleased to announce that Dr. Thomas Mitzel has been unanimously selected by the Dean of the Faculty Search Committee to be Trinity’s next Dean of the Faculty and Vice President for Academic Affairs. Tom, who left Trinity in July 2011 as Associate Academic Dean after fifteen years in the Department of Chemistry, is currently Dean, School of Natural Sciences; Interim Director, St. Edward’s University Wild Basin Creative Research Center; and Professor of Chemistry at St. Edward’s University.
Within several days following my announcement that Dean Fraden was leaving Trinity, many members of the faculty from across the disciplines suggested Tom as a potential candidate. This provided strong evidence of his personal and professional stature on campus after his many years of service here.
The search committee was comprised of Professors Joseph Byrne (Studio Arts), Kathleen Curran (Fine Arts), Leslie Desmangles (Religion and International Studies), Michael Lestz (History and Secretary of the Faculty), Joan Morrison (Biology), Garth Myers (Raether Chair of Urban International Studies), and our CFO Paul Mutone. Professor Lestz and I co-chaired the search. More than twenty members of the faculty were nominated. The selection process comprised reviews of CVs and letters of interest, written statements, and interviews.
Three academic members of the Board of Trustees (Dr. Philip Khoury ’71, Dr. Kevin Maloney ’79, and Dr. William Richardson ’62) interviewed the three semi-finalists but did not cast votes. The faculty search committee’s final votes were in the form of secret ballots which were then tallied by and reported to me by the search committee. The search committee's opinion was formed independently and the advice of the Board members gracious enough to take part in the search was consulted only after the vote by the search committee. I recused myself from the committee’s final deliberations and did not vote since it would have been improper for me to do so, given that the position reports to me.
Rich Prigodich has served ably as interim Dean of the Faculty since January, and I am grateful to him for his willingness to serve in this position during our search for Dean Fraden’s permanent replacement. Rich will continue to serve as interim Dean until June 30, 2013.
I wish to thank all those faculty, staff members, and students who submitted nominations, those who allowed the committee to consider their candidacies, the three trustees for their time and guidance, and all of you who advised the committee throughout this process.
Tom will begin his tenure as Dean on July 1, 2013 and will serve in this capacity until June 30, 2016. My successor will thus have a year in which to decide on a more permanent Deanship here at our College. I know I speak for all of us in welcoming Tom back home to Trinity and in looking forward to working with him in the years to come. Tom will come to campus later this spring to meet with chairs of departments and programs and various other members of the faculty and staff.
Yours very truly,
James F. Jones, Jr.
