(France, 2013) Directed by Abdellatif Kechiche. Screenplay by Abdellatif Kechiche and Ghalya Lacroix, based on the graphic novel by Julie Maroh. Cast: Léa Seydoux, Adèle Exarchopoulos, Salim Kechiouche, Mona Walravens, Jérémie Laheurte.
Breaking with tradition, the Cannes Film Festival Jury for the first time awarded their highest prize - the Palme d'Or - jointly to a director (Abdellatif Kechiche) and the film's two stars, Léa Seydoux and Adèle Exarchopoulos. Kechiche, whose The Secret of the Grain was inspired by his French-Tunisian roots, has now turned to the coming of age of Adèle, a working class French high school student (Léa Seydoux) and her love affair with Emma, a slightly older and wealthier art student (Adèle Exarchopoulos). Undeniably provocative for its (relatively few) scenes of raw eroticism, Blue is a joyous, honest and heartbreaking take on first love. 179 min.
Out Film CT invites you to A Sweets Reception at 7 PM on Thursday Feb 6 before the screening of the movie. Desserts, coffee, tea will be available in the downstairs lobby of Cinestudio, free for all who attend. We hope to see you there.
“Many more words can – and will – be spent on Blue Is the Warmest Color, but for now I’ll settle for just one: glorious.A.O. Scott, New York Times.
