Dear Faculty and Staff,
I am in the midst of planning for the upcoming holidays and campus closings for our growing international student population…almost 10% of the student body now.
As you know, there are no college services during the Thanksgiving break: Wed., Nov. 21th – Sun., Nov. 25th. In light of this and the upcoming winter break, my office is assisting our international students who may not have been invited to celebrate this or other Holidays and/or those who remain on campus during campus closures (which is the majority of our international students), with an opportunity to have a meal with a family at home, participate in a family gathering, or join you on an outing outside the campus.
If you are interested in hosting one or more of our international students over the Thanksgiving or Winter Break please let me know. I know many of the students will be cooking a Thanksgiving dinner at the iHouse on Thanksgiving Day, but many are looking to experience this American tradition with a local family. If you are not available to host on the given holiday, please let me know what days you are available to host someone and an idea of what you might be doing with the student (i.e.: dinner, lunch, day at the museum, Hartford Stage). This is a great way to get to know our international students better and allow them a chance to experience life outside campus and typical American family activities.
For planning purposes, please let me know as soon as possible if:
· You are interested in hosting someone over the Thanksgiving or Winter Break
· What day and times are you available to host someone
· What activities you may include the student in (sledding, skiing, theatre, shopping, museum tour)
· If you are already hosting a student, I would enjoy knowing about this as I don’t see each one of them all that often.
If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact me. Thank you to those of you who have hosted in the past. It is greatly appreciated!
